Quality is the first norm for art, but its final norm is love and truth, the enriching of human life, the deepening of our vision.

- Kastelet-Crikvine sacred art complex of Ivan Mestrovic. On the beautiful Marjan Peninsular, within pleasant walking distance of Split, is a striking building designed by the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović to be his family’s summer home, as well as to provide studio and gallery space. Today, the house and grounds are used to exhibit a large collection of his work – mainly sculptures in wood, bronze and marble. The most impressive collection, however, is a hundred meters down the road in an annex of the gallery. Kaštelet Crikvine is a 16th century mansion with a restored chapel and cloistered courtyard on the cliff above the sparkling blue Adriatic Sea. The walls of the chapel hold a stunning set of 28 wooden panels carved by Meštrović, with each relief in the cycle being inspired by the life of Christ. A large wooden crucifix adorns the wall above the altar.
